Ceramics, plants & design

Artisanal workshop

Bas is the result of Alicia Bas’s passion for ceramics. In 1970 she set up her workshop in Barcelona and began working with clay. In 2013, after a long journey through various creative phases and with the initiative of her daughter, Xènia Bas, the Bas project was born.

Bas is a family project which draws on a deep understanding of handmade ceramics and the precise lines of contemporary design.

Adding a design element into this craft gives rise to a new perspective, reinvents new production techniques and is a fresh take on the subtle imperfections of handmade work.

In both the experimental phase and in the making of Bas pots, we use the knowledge and techniques of traditional craftsmanship together with the modern tools of today’s design.

Throughout this process it is also essential to study different plants; taking into account their needs, characteristics and conditions.

Being a natural substance, clay is the ideal medium to ensure true symbiosis between the plant and the pot. The textures and different finishes give us the unique character of the earth and are a constant reminder of its origin, its essence.

Our aim is to make pots worthy of the plants in them; pots that are no longer simple containers but cocoons in which plants feel cared for. In doing so, the plant and the pot form a whole that plays a part in the composition of everyday space, whether in the home or elsewhere.
